How versions and hotfixes work

Minor updates (8.2.5, 8.2.6 …) are included in your licence and arrive through the built-in update service; they install in minutes and do not change the data structure. Major versions (8.3, 9.0) are offered to existing customers at preferential rates with a summary of what changed, what it will not break, and a recommended path, including a parallel-install option.

Hotfixes are released only for confirmed defects, are listed in the release notes with their symptom, and carry a one-line rollback instruction. Managed clients have updates applied and verified for them outside business hours.

Before you upgrade

  • Take a verified backup the same day.
  • Read the release notes’ ‘preparation’ section.
  • Install on one workstation first; the update service supports staged rollouts.
  • Avoid month-end week for anything larger than a hotfix.

System requirements

Requirements vary slightly by edition and hosting arrangement; the installer checks them automatically. The figures below cover the common on-premises configuration; cloud-hosted clients need only a current browser.

Existing customers upgrading an older server: the installer and the support desk will both tell you where your hardware falls short before you spend anything.

Installation, in five steps

  1. 1
    Verify the prerequisites

The installer checks operating system, database and disk space first, and refuses to continue if something is missing.

  2. 2
Back up, and prove the backup

Take a verified backup of any existing InsightSuite data before anything touches it. The installer will remind you.

  3. 3
Install to the server, then workstations

One server installation, then the lightweight workstation setup, which can be deployed by link.

  4. 4
Enter or confirm the licence key

The key activates the modules and user count on your licence. A re-issued key after a server replacement takes one email to the support desk.

  5. 5
Open the about screen and check the version

The version and build number shown must match the release notes you were sent. If they do not, stop and call us before using the system.

Version support policy

We support the current release and the one immediately preceding it. Support for a version ends when the second release after it ships, and the closing date for every version is published in the release notes at least six months ahead. Hotfixes are released only for confirmed defects, are listed with their symptom in the release notes, and carry a one-line rollback instruction. Organisations that must stay on an older version for a defined period (a certification cycle, a busy season) should talk to us at the managed desk; a support window can usually be arranged.

Practical questions about downloads

How can we verify a download is genuine?
Every installer and hotfix ships with a checksum in its release notes; verify it before running anything on a server. Files are issued only through the links our desk provides for your licence. If a checksum does not match, telephone us before running it.
Can we deploy to many workstations without visiting each desk?
Yes. The workstation setup is a lightweight installer distributable with your usual deployment tool, or by a link users run themselves; the licence key lives on the server, not on individual machines. Standard desktop management handles it without scripting, and the built-in update service keeps workstations current from that point. A fifty-seat rollout is an afternoon’s work for one person — which is exactly as it should be.
