Company history

Software Insight was registered in Brisbane on 1 July 2000 by a group of systems developers. It remains privately held, in Queensland, and its support desk is answered by the staff who do the work.

2000 — 2004

Software Insight is registered on 1 July 2000. Early work included automating invoicing for a haulage contractor and a stock ledger for a hardware wholesaler. The first product, Insight Accounts, was released in 2002.

2005 — 2009

Insight Docs launched in 2005, adding full-text search over scanned documents. The 200th client organisation went live in 2009.

2010 — 2016

Asset, reporting and workflow modules were added. In 2013 the modules were unified under one platform and one shared database, named InsightSuite.

2017 — 2022

A cloud-hosted InsightSuite option on Australian servers arrived in 2017, and the Managed IT Support service followed in 2021. A poorly handled pricing change in this period led to the current plain-language licence policy.

2023 — today

InsightSuite 8.2 shipped in 2026 with a rewritten reporting engine and a redesigned document viewer. Development and support continue to operate from the same office.

Past changes and their consequences

  • The 2011 pricing change. A maintenance-fee change announced in an invoice rather than a letter. Two customers left. The plain-language licence policy dates from that quarter.
  • The 2014 scheduling module. Built without a customer request; withdrawn within two years; its two users were migrated at no charge.
  • The first cloud launch, underprovisioned. The 2017 hosted option began on hardware that was sized optimistically. Hardware was replaced and affected customers’ terms extended. The managed service now verifies the restore chain before promising uptime.

Questions we are often asked about the company

Why stay private and one-office for 26 years?
Because the alternatives the company watched — acquisition, offshore development, franchised support — separated the person who promises from the person who delivers. One office in Queensland keeps those people together and keeps support answerable to development.
What happened to products you discontinued?
Two in twenty-six years. The 2014 scheduling module was built for a comparison chart rather than a need, was withdrawn within two years, and its two active users were migrated at no charge. The original Insight Accounts did not die but was renamed Insight Ledger in the 2013 unification. Our retirement policy is unchanged: at least six months written notice, a free migration path, and export options that outlast the product.
How did the 2013 unification affect existing customers?
InsightSuite was offered to every existing customer at preferential rates on fixed-quoted migrations, with a parallel run as standard. Most customers moved within two release cycles. The longest holdout stayed on the legacy version for four years and received support throughout.
